Pasty Making

After careful research into pasties and vegetable flavours and textures, we designed and made our own vegetable pasties. We thoroughly enjoyed making the pasties, but the highlight was definitely tasting them!

Christmas light up boxes

There was a buzz of excitement in our classroom as the children made their Christmas light up boxes. They worked hard to create bright and sparkly Christmas designs with a light up feature. It was fantastic seeing their focus and determination, especially when overcoming challenges making their circuits.

Visit to St. John's

Year 4 had a wonderfully creative afternoon at St John’s! They enjoyed a music lesson learning to play the djembe. They demonstrated super listening skills and were brilliant at the “call and response” activities. As well as this, they all made corner bookmarks which they took great delight in personalising.

Roman Soldier Visit

We had a fabulous visit from a Roman soldier. He taught us so many things about life as a Roman soldier and also about life for people living during the reign of the Romans. It was such a fun and informative visit with lots of battle cries, dressing up and even a splash of water!

English - persuasive writing

In Year 4 we are reading The Boy Who Biked the World - Part two: the Americas by Alistair Humphreys. It is a fabulous book and we love reading about Tom's adventures as he braves the challenges of cycling through the Americas. Today, the Woodpeckers had great fun practising their persuasive writing as they created adverts for some of the unusual delicacies that Tom has eaten on his travels.  With an impressive mix of adjectives, a generous helping of exaggeration and a few rhetorical questions, the children have worked hard to persuade everyone that they would love to try roast guinea pig, chicken foot soup or maybe even some fly burgers!

Art - Catherine Rayner

The Woodpeckers have been learning all about author and illustrator, Catherine Raynor. Using images and newly learned facts, they have created fact files to share their knowledge of her. They especially enjoyed hearing the story of Solomon Crocodile and seeing a video of how he was drawn and the great techniques that Catherine uses. Super work Woodpeckers! What wonderful artists you all are!

Holy Week - Palm Sunday

As part of our learning about Holy Week, the Woodpeckers re-enacted the story of Palm Sunday. They learned about the significance of palm leaves being used to greet Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The children took on different roles during the re-enactment, including those people that were not happy about Jesus' arrival! Can you spot the characters who aren't joining in with the celebrations?

World Book Day

We have had a fabulous day celebrating World Book Day! Throughout the day we have enjoyed a World Book Day assembly with the Masked Reader, had lots of opportunities to "Stop, Drop and Read", designed a book cover, participated in a book swap and viewed everyone's super book character paper plates. What a fantastic day and all while wearing our pyjamas!

PE - Dance

Over the last few weeks in dance, the Woodpeckers have been creating motifs to represent the different parts of the water cycle. This week, to round off our dance topic, they have been working in groups to plan a short sequence about the entire water cycle, pulling all their ideas together. They have also been considering what different dance techniques to add into the sequence. The children have shown excellent dance skills and have worked really well together in groups. Well done Woodpeckers!

Year 4 Spellings - quiz date 7.3.24Class led Prayer and Liturgy

The Woodpeckers led their class Prayer and Liturgy about the season of Lent and the importance of forgiveness. They shared the story of Zaccheus. They then thought about times they have made wrong choices and how God always forgives us. Well done to all the children for leading us in such a prayerful way and thank you to all the parents who joined us.

Perimeter

The Woodpeckers have been combining their knowledge of perimeter and times tables to calculate the perimeters of a variety of regular polygons. They demonstrated great thinking skills to solve a range of problems and were eloquent when explaining their answers. Super work, Woodpeckers!

Map reading

As part of our water topic, the Woodpeckers have been learning all about the Lake District. They were given a map of the area, along with some aerial view photos, and they had to match the photos to their locations on the map, paying particular attention to the areas of water (as this gave them the biggest clues!) Although some parts looked very similar, the children spotted each of the seven locations and were able to discuss the similarities and differences. Excellent work, Woodpeckers!

Science - Living Things

We have started our new science topic "Living Things" by looking at Venn and Carroll diagrams as ways of grouping animals. The children thought carefully about the characteristics of a range of animals and then created their own Carroll diagrams. They worked very hard and the lesson prompted some very interesting discussions about the animals. A great start to our new topic!

Faiths Around the World Week

The Woodpeckers enjoyed learning and performing a Jewish dance that is sometimes performed by Jewish people to celebrate Shabbat. Shabbat is a Jewish day of rest starting from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Jewish people celebrate Shabbat in their own ways but the story of creation from the Torah is always remembered and celebrated. The Woodpeckers performed elegantly and respectfully showing great confidence and concentration. Well done children, your performances were beautiful!
